The way in which the Saints Row series of games started off as open-world GTA-like crime sandbox games and then ended up as fourth-wall breaking superhero farces with a focus on fun and funny, was quite something to behold. After the release of Saints Row IV in 2013, developer Volition has been pretty quiet about what it's next project might be. Until now, with the announcement of its next open-world action game Agents of Mayhem, that's headed to Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC in 2017.

Apparently taking place within the same universe as the Saints Row series of games, the short description of the premise certainly sounds like the next logical step for the series. And gets extra points for its great use of acronyms.

Meet the Agents of M.A.Y.H.E.M. (the Multinational Agency for Hunting Evil Masterminds) – a motley outfit of unique and diverse Super Agents recruited from around the world to thwart the destructive schemes of the evil supervillain organization L.E.G.I.O.N. (the League of Evil Gentlemen Intent on Obliterating Nations).

Although no gameplay footage has been shown, we do have the following cinematic trailer courtesy of IGN. And as the title suggests, the game will offer up a co-op experience in addition to single-player.

Expect to hear more about Agents of Mayhem at E3.
