EA have made it no secret that they want to offer incentives to first-hand purchasers of their games. Their project ten dollar initiative aims to package launch-day bonus downloadable content extras redeemable from a coupon-code provided in the retail box. With secondhand buyers having to fork out US$10 if they want the goods (in the case of this BF:BC2 content, it's US$15).

While some see it as just stuff that should have been in the game to begin with (yours truly included) it is still extra content none-the-less and sure to add more longevity to the game.

Here's what the official Battlefield Blog had to say about the Day One Map Pack:
The map pack contains two new maps which are the Rush map, Nelson Bay and the Conquest map, Laguna Alta which you can check out in the video now. The maps will be available from March 2nd which will allow the lucky North America players to get access and practice while us Europeans wait a few days more.
Watch the trailer right here on AusGamers.

Battlefield Bad Company 2 lands in Australia on March 4th 2010 for PC and Xbox 360 with PlayStation 3 following on March 11th.

Pick 2 maps at random, call em DLC and use em to get a cut of the 2nd hand market. Lame.

DLC isn't about ongoing support and development, anymore. It's just about ripping off customers.

see Mass Effect 2 for the opposite.

Interesting they both come from the EA stable though - I wonder if that has anything to do with the individual dev teams/companies making the decision...

DLC that splits the community is lame. Things such as maps should be the same for everyone in a game such as this.

I don't have a problem with the used-game market going under. If it means businesses like EB have to actually start being competitive, instead of over-priced f***heads, go for it. I never buy used games anyway.

Yeah, anything that says "f*** you" to the secondhand games racket is ok with me.

^ as above

This stuff is all free for original purchasers, and while i dont console, where do think all that extra shelf space comes from for 2nd hand games in eb/jb/game etc.. yeh smaller pc sections each year. Then those same retailers turn around and cry it up to the publishers about how steam under cuts them and then we get extra pressure for those superawesomemegadeal localized aus steam prices lol

Why the hate for second hand games, and why is it a "racket"?

I'm wondering if there'll be any addons for MW2, as s*** as it is.

I'd never buy anything used that required a CD key because you know it's gonna been used by a hacker.

f*** it i almost was going to change my ways when it came to gaming but now the whole thing is just so f***ed up its just easier to pirate now.

I can see it from both sides, with the second hand game market the devs miss out on the money the same as if someone pirated it so they are doing soemthing to encourage people to buy the game first hand.

I also don't think that 2 extra maps is going to split a community hell most people will just pick their fav maps and then stick to them and thats going to be different from everyone.

On a side note where the hell is 1943.

Well, I can only speak for myself, but personally for me its because the only people who are benefitting from it are the EB's or the Gamestops (well, in America, don't think we have them here). It'd be one thing if they were selling them cheap, you know, $30 for a second hand game kind of thing, but I was in EB the other day and there was a second hand copy of MW2 for $100. Thats just f*****g bulls***, and thats why I called it a racket.

If the secondhand games thing was genuinely in the consumer's or the gamer's best interests, then I wouldn't have so much of a problem with it, but its not, the only interests it serves are the giant retail chains. And yeah, yeah, I know, they're a business, they're in it to make money, but theres making money and then theres bending your customers over a barrel and roughly f*****g them.

The other argument that often comes up, about it stealing money from devs, I dunno, I have a bit of trouble trying to side with that one. You would think I wouldn't, since I am a dev, but it just doesn't really make sense. I'm sure cash converters doesn't send some money to Samsung when I buy a second hand microwave from them, thats just the nature of second hand goods.

I guess developers are getting screwed out of money in some ways, but its not because they're not getting cuts from the second hand game sales, its because places like EB are pushing the second hand games over and above the new games. A year or so ago when I went into EB to buy the first Uncharted game, they had none on the shelf, so I asked the guy behind the counter and he tried to sell me a second hand copy instead. I politely declined, but he kept pushing it, started questioning me as to why I didn't want the second hand copy, assuring me it was just as good as a new one, really going the hard sell. I was starting to get a bit pissed so I not-so-politely declined once more and turned to leave. That was when he went "Ok, just wait, I'll check to see if we have any new copies", and suprise suprise, they did.

Yeah, my girlfriend used to work at EB, and she said that this is pretty standard practice. They're supposed to always try and sell the used copies over the new ones, sell those bulls*** "scratch warranties," and they get interrogated by management if they don't do so many per month.

As Khel said, if it were actually a significant saving to buy pre-owned games, then I'd do it, but when they're knocking $5 off a game that I can get brand new for $30 cheaper at JB HiFi, why the f*** should I care about them?

typical tight money. -.-
They worked hard on a really good game.
They want money from the used-game buyers.
It's business after all, deal with it.
If you buy the game as the first user you get the maps free!!! ok?!
So BUY the game from a shop if you dont want to pay for the extra maps.. losers.

That's why EB is a pile of horse s*** when it comes to buying games. They overcharge like a mother f***** for everything. There is no excuse other than greed when 2nd hand copies start selling for more than brand new ones, at other stores.

They gathered a ton of signatures for the R18+ game cause. That's about all they are good for. Replace them with video game only JB stores IMO.

Replace the only major game outlet with a JB copy, that with no competition would soon be as bad as EB itself.
